New network technologies are being created all the time, but I have become particularly fascinated by the latest buzzword cloud networking. Are you curious about it too? Then let me take you through its origins. Cloud networking is a phrase trademarked by Arista Networks. It refers to the networking requirements of cloud computing. I can just see you raising your eyebrows! Well, not to worry. If you dont know what cloud computing is, Ill explain that too. Cloud computing allows IT resources to be accessed in a very flexible manner. In other words, it means that you can host your applications in large data centers to make them available to anyone, anytime, anywhere. So, without any knowledge, expertise, or even control over the infrastructure that supports them, technology-enabled services can be accessed over the Internet. If you have used Google Apps, you probably already know that you can use common business applications with any web browser, but their software and data are stored on servers. Cloud networking includes the next generation networks that will provide an effective network fabric to accommodate a large number of servers and the huge amount of data they will store. Effective network fabrics should be able to handle throughputs of trillions of data packets. They should also have low latency, as it is essential for improved application performance and better server utilization. Reliable performance is expected of these cloud networks in order for them to service several simultaneous applications. Because they operate 24x7, they must also be self-healing and easy to manage and upgrade. Arista has set up a cloud networking platform that consists of next generation technology like 10 Gigabit Ethernet switches, an Extensible Operating System, and other related products. It will be interesting to see if and how next generation networks develop to accommodate cloud networking. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About the Author: Michael Sorensen has been in the computer networking field for many years now.
